Friends on Facebook

I know I've touched on this subject once before so I hope I'm not repeating myself.

I had a good look at my friends list on Facebook this morning....I don't have a huge amount of "Friends" (unlike some people I know who like to have a competition to see how many friends they can hook up to) I have 41.....some are family and relatives, some are old school friends I have found on Facebook (one thing it's good for!), some are old work colleagues, some are friends I've met since becoming a Mum, and some are
old friends I've known for years.

How many friends do you have on Facebook? Do you consider them 'real' friends, or people you haven't seen for a long time (i.e old school friends), ex and current work colleagues, or people you've met recently and said "Are you on Facebook" and then become their friend.

If I was to count on my hand how many are truly my friends, I would probably count 5 or 6 at the most...isn't that funny how we consider people 'friends' but in our time of need, we'd probably only rely on a small few to be there for us. I know it's not quantity but quality of friends that counts...so it doesn't bother me too much that I don't have a big group of friends.....in any case, when would I find the time to catch up with any of them..especially when I have my own family to look after.

I know a few people who have said "If you need anything give me a call", or "If you want to drop "Popette" over to my place so you can go to the Drs, let me know"...etc. etc. But then I wonder how good are they at keeping their promise, is it something that people just say to make them look nice or do they generally mean it?

Being a Stay-at-Home Mum does your head in at times, as you seem to have more time to dwell on these sort of things, then worrying about deadlines or getting your work or projects completed. I know what I would rather be stressing about....give me a project anyday!

For a while now, I've been having issues with certain people in my Mums group...e.g where they'll invite other Mums over to their house for a catch-up, BBQ etc, but not include me or if I instigate a catch-up, they will always say they can't make it for whatever reason. I've got nothing against the Mums and I generally like them, but sometimes I get the feeling that they don't like me, and I wonder what it is that I've done wrong. I don't know if its because we're different in ages, so the younger ones see each other more often and get along better, or if it's something else. I don't know about you, but I can't stand people who 'backstab' other people, or are nice to your face one minute then completely rude the next.

I don't know whether to keep catching up with these people or break all contact and find another group (maybe a Playgroup) for my daughter and I to join and meet new people....what do you think?

Maybe it's just me, maybe I don't trust people as well as I thought I did. But then again, I have been 'burnt' over the years by people I have thought were my friends. (See I told you it's doing my head in!!). Then again, I am pregnant, so maybe all the emotions mixed in with my raging hormones isn't helping....hmmmmm.

I guess I have to think about it this way.....who are my friends that I can trust to tell my darkest secret to, and who are those friends (might not be the name to call them, maybe acquaintances?) who I currently have something in common with and catch up with, because of my current circumstances (e.g I'm a Mum).

Do you regard these sort of people as acquaintances or friends?

  1. I have lots of "friends" on Facebook who aren't really friends but added me. Many of them probably added me to see my profile and sticky beak who married Corey. My husband was popular at school. Some of these kids bullied me at school! But now we are at similar stages we encourage eachother with the kids and they read my blog and I read their funny statuses. It doesn't really bother me.

  2. Sounds like your mother's group aren't being very friendly. I'd trust your intuition. I wouldn't have the courage to confront them and ask what their issue is, but it may be worth it. I'd end up leaving and always wondering.

  3. My Mummy Daze,

First of all thank you so much for awarding my blog, I feel very honoured....I haven't been writing all that long so to have someone award me on my little blog makes me feel very special :-)

Now, do I have a time limit to pass on this award?? As I'm still new to the whole world of blogging and following blogs, I honestly don't have 15 I could pass it on to as yet.

Yeah I don't think I could come right out and ask them, I probably should, but I hate confrontation...not my big point I guess. I think I'll join a playgroup when next term begins.

  4. Im guilty of keeping friends at FB for networking purposes. I am keen on privacy though so I restrict on what I want them to see or know about my life.
